One of my closest friends is a psychotherapist in Minneapolis.
One Tuesday morning he called me, all excited.
He and two of his colleagues had just attended a Brainspotting training. All three of them received Brainspotting sessions as part of the training.
And all three of them experienced deep, lasting healing of lifelong trauma that their personal work up until then hadn't fully cleared. In only one to three Brainspotting sessions.
My friend's mother died when he was 11. His father didn't respond well, and the whole family system became seriously unhealthy. My friend's life had been profoundly affected by that trauma. Even though he'd done a lot of work and made progress on it over the years, he still experienced persistent, disruptive upsets in response to his family's unhealthy dynamics.
That lifelong reactivity dissolved for him in one Brainspotting session.
My friend and both his colleagues immediately began using Brainspotting with their clients. They saw the same thing happening: people are consistently experiencing breakthrough results with each session.
So of course I had to try it.
What Happened For Me
In my first Brainspotting session (about a year ago), I worked on a pattern of reactivity I had with my (at that time) former partner. When he would "flip his lid," some part of me would believe that I was somehow to blame for that, even though my whole, integrated self knew that wasn't true. It would take so much energy to manage the "bottomless pit" experience of upset, bewilderment, hurt, outrage, and anguish that I'd feel.
That lifelong "over-responsibility" dissolved after ONE session. Now when he flips his lid (he is still on his PTSD-healing journey), I feel a sense of calm and clarity that whatever's going on for him, I'm not responsible for his upset. I can set boundaries that respect us both, without tying myself in knots of exhausting bewilderment, anger, or anguish first. I can't tell you, the difference that has made for me, and for us. (We're exploring the possibility of getting back together ... but, that's a story for another time.)
In my next two Brainspotting sessions, I worked on traumatic experiences involving my birth mother and my adoption as a 2-week-old infant. In one session each, those core traumas were resolved in a way that altered the inner foundation of my world.
I honestly couldn't quite believe it.
The short version of that healing experience? I have an "inner family" rooting for me, now. Even the deepest inner orphans in me feel the deep grounding of belonging with people on this earth.
It's a profound coming home.
Something that 25 years of other kinds of devoted inner work never gave me.
I feel unspeakably grateful ... and profoundly excited about the depth and speed of healing that is possible for us, now.

What IS Brainspotting?
Brainspotting is a neurophysiological integration process that discovered by an EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapist in 2003.
It involves finding the spot in our visual field that opens up all the unconscious associations that one or more previous, unprocessed distressing experiences (traumas) has for us.
Focusing on a Brainspot while listening to Biolateral music (that alternately plays in our right and left ears, activating both the right and left hemispheres of our brain), supported by a resonant, empathic facilitator, allows our brain and body to process and integrate/resolve traumatic experiences faster, more effectively, and more affordably than any other method I've seen.*
* Stellate Ganglion Blocks are also highly effective, but cost $1500 per treatment. Even more extraordinary results are being reported with psychedelic-assisted therapies that are not expected to be approved for use by the general public until 2020 and 2021.
